Fergus Falls and Alexandria both offer hospital services and regional recreation, but they are separate home bases with different daily routes and housing histories. Compare the city where you will work, the specific medical services you use and the type of property you want before treating a drive between the two as a minor detail. A regional connection is useful; it is not the same as living near your everyday destination.
Begin with Fergus Falls properties and Alexandria properties. I can help you turn those broad searches into a shortlist based on actual destinations and house condition. Contact Janet with the places you need to reach most often.
Both cities have local hospital campuses
Lake Region Healthcare's Fergus Falls hospital is at 712 Cascade Street South. Its location directory separately lists the main clinic on West Vernon Avenue and the walk-in clinic on West Lincoln Avenue. A buyer should therefore map the relevant facility rather than assuming every visit goes to one campus. Lake Region Healthcare locations.
In Alexandria, Alomere Health's hospital campus is at 111 17th Avenue East. Its official page describes a general medical and surgical hospital with a Level III trauma center. This provides a concrete point for route planning, not a guarantee that every specialist or service you need will be available there. Alomere Health campus.
Before choosing a town around healthcare, confirm provider availability, insurance participation and the location of recurring appointments. If your visits include a separate clinic, therapy location or out-of-town specialist, put each on the comparison sheet. An existing relationship may matter more than a general impression of the size of a hospital.
For someone employed by a healthcare system, distinguish the job's assigned campus from the system's mailing address. Test the commute against shift hours and the employee entrance. A route that works for a daytime appointment can feel different at the beginning or end of an overnight shift.
Treat travel distance as a planning input
Interstate 94 is the regional highway connection to evaluate between the two cities. MnDOT's state highway map is the official starting point for understanding the corridor and its local approaches. Minnesota state highway map.
For scale, the route planner Rome2Rio reports a driving distance of approximately 50 miles between its Fergus Falls and Alexandria city endpoints. This is the provider's routing estimate, checked September 22, 2026, rather than a distance measured between your prospective house and employer. It should not be converted into a promised commute time. Fergus Falls–Alexandria route estimate.
Count how often you would make that trip. As a hypothetical example, a 50-mile one-way trip on five workdays would mean about 500 commuting miles a week before errands. The same distance for an occasional appointment creates a very different housing decision. Substitute the actual route and your schedule before making a budget.
When touring, include the neighborhood approach, highway interchange and final streets to the destination. Consider whether your job allows weather flexibility, whether two household members travel in opposite directions and whether a change in work location would alter the decision.
Housing age gives context, not a condition rating
Alexandria's published 2023 Housing Study Update compares owner-occupied housing using American Community Survey estimates identified in the study as 2021. Its table reports a median construction year of 1982 for Alexandria and 1961 for Fergus Falls. These are historical city-level estimates for owner-occupied units, not the ages of today's listings or a finding about current repair needs. Alexandria housing study, Table 48.
That difference suggests a useful way to organize showings: compare the original building era separately from the work completed since then. An older home with documented roof, wiring and plumbing updates can present a different ownership task from an untouched house of the same age. A newer construction date does not establish the quality of maintenance.
For each home, write down the original year, major additions and dates of documented system replacements. Ask how finished basement space is heated and where laundry is located. These practical details often explain why two similarly sized houses function differently.
If a listing relies on a substantial addition, use the unpermitted-addition review to organize records questions. Do not reject an entire city because of its housing-age profile, and do not use an aggregate median to skip an individual inspection.
Compare water geography in terms of use
Fergus Falls' own stormwater information identifies the Otter Tail River, Lake Alice, Wright Lake and Hoot Lake among the local receiving waters. That combination of river and lakes is a useful reminder to identify the specific waterbody behind an address or view. Fergus Falls stormwater information.
Around Alexandria, make the same distinction among individual lakes rather than asking only whether a home is “in lakes country.” A downtown walking route, a public beach visit and a private dock each involve different access and maintenance questions. Choose the activity first, then inspect the route that supports it.
Both communities connect with the Central Lakes State Trail. The DNR describes the paved trail as extending 55 miles from Fergus Falls to Osakis through Alexandria and other communities. That is the whole trail's length, not the Fergus Falls–Alexandria driving distance. DNR Central Lakes State Trail.
Visit the trail entrance you would actually use. Check whether reaching it from the property involves comfortable street crossings, transporting bicycles or walking along a road shoulder. A recreation feature becomes useful when the connection from home works for you.
Build a shortlist around three distinct decisions
| Decision | Information to compare | Avoid substituting |
|---|---|---|
| Employment and appointments | Exact worksite, provider and weekly frequency | A city-center travel estimate |
| House upkeep | Inspection findings and replacement records | Median construction year alone |
| Recreation | Named trail entrance, park, lake or river access | A general lakes-country description |
Compare current available homes within the same property category. A city house, rural acreage and lake home can have very different maintenance and utility obligations even when the purchase prices are similar. Use insurance quotes, actual tax statements and utility records rather than an assumed cost advantage for one town.
Include the costs of a longer drive only when the route is one you expect to use. Conversely, give proper weight to being near family, a worksite or a regular activity if that is the reason for the move. The point is to compare a whole routine without pretending every preference can be reduced to dollars.
After a day of showings, identify the home that best matches your daily obligations and the one that best matches your recreation plans. If they differ, discuss the compromise openly before an offer.
