Relocation
Alexandria is a city of about 14,300 people on I-94, two hours from Minneapolis, built around a chain of connected lakes. Janet Matchinsky has helped clients relocate here from as far as California. This page covers what the area is and how a long-distance purchase works.
Alexandria is the county seat of Douglas County in west-central Minnesota. The city had 14,335 residents at the 2020 census and the county 39,006 (Wikipedia: Alexandria, Wikipedia: Douglas County). It functions as the regional hub for a much larger area: the place people from the surrounding small towns come for the hospital, the college, the big-box stores and the lakes.
The region Janet covers stretches from Otter Tail County in the north to Renville County in the south and from Stevens County in the west to Stearns and Morrison in the east. Willmar, Sartell, Long Prairie, Glenwood and Osakis are all within her regular sold history. See every town on the communities page.
The Alexandria Chain of Lakes is a string of connected lakes joined by channels. The 5 chain lakes on this site come to about 6,513 acres: Lake Carlos (2,605 acres), Lake Le Homme Dieu (1,801 acres), Lake Darling (1,050 acres), Lake Geneva (640 acres), and Lake Victoria (417 acres), per the Minnesota DNR LakeFinder. Lake Miltona, north of town, is not part of the chain but is the largest lake lying entirely within the county.
East of Alexandria, Lake Osakis covers 6,389 acres across Douglas and Todd counties with 26.8 miles of shoreline (Minnesota DNR LakeFinder). Kandiyohi County, an hour south, has its own lake cluster around Spicer and New London.
Lake living is why most people move here and it is the part of the purchase with the most rules. Shoreline setbacks, septic compliance, dock rights and road plowing all vary lake by lake. The Lake Finder lists acres, depth and public access for more than 40 lakes, and the buying a lake home guide covers the checklist.
For most people the practical reality is a car and a short commute. Traffic is not a factor. Winter driving is; buyers coming from warmer states get a frank talk from Janet about which rural roads are plowed last.
Alomere Health, formerly Douglas County Hospital, is the regional hospital in Alexandria with 127 beds, a Level III trauma center and its own clinic network, including a clinic in Osakis (Alomere Health, RHT Compass). For a city of this size, having a full hospital in town is unusual, and buyers who want a hospital within a few minutes of home often choose Alexandria over smaller lake towns for that reason.
Willmar, Sartell/St. Cloud and Fergus Falls each have their own hospitals for buyers settling in the southern and eastern parts of the footprint.
Alexandria's economy runs on manufacturing, health care, education and lake-driven hospitality. The Alexandria Area Economic Development Commission lists 3M, Douglas Machine, Alexandria Industries, Massman Automation and ITW Heartland among the city's major manufacturers, with Alomere Health anchoring health care (Living Alexandria Area).
Alexandria Technical & Community College is a public two-year college in town with roughly 3,700 to 4,700 students depending on the year and how enrollment is counted (U.S. News, Community College Review). Remote workers moving from the metro will find fiber and cable internet in town; on rural and lake properties, Janet checks availability address by address before you write an offer.
Alexandria Public Schools (ISD 206) serves about 4,000 students across nine schools. Alexandria Area High School, at 4300 Pioneer Rd SE, enrolled roughly 1,300 students in 2024–25 (U.S. News, Wikipedia). The district also draws open-enrollment students from surrounding towns.
Each town page on this site lists its school district. Smaller districts in the region (Osakis, Brandon-Evansville, Minnewaska, Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and others) tend to have small class sizes and strong community identity; Janet can speak to what parents in each district tell her.
Buyers who want walkable and low-maintenance usually look in Alexandria itself, where the housing stock runs from 1920s bungalows near downtown to newer construction on the south and east edges; Janet has represented the buyer on 5 closings in Alexandria since November 2023 (NorthstarMLS). Buyers who want lake frontage on a budget look at Osakis, Miltona, Garfield and the smaller lakes in Pope and Todd counties. Buyers who need to be near Willmar or St. Cloud for work often land in Spicer, New London, Sartell or Long Prairie; Janet's NorthstarMLS record includes closings in Spicer, New London, Sartell and Long Prairie.
The Runestone Museum downtown houses the Kensington Runestone, and Big Ole, the 28-foot Viking statue, stands nearby; both are the town's signature landmarks (Alexandria Technical & Community College). Beyond that, the calendar is lakes in summer, ice fishing and snowmobile trails in winter, and a downtown Broadway with independent restaurants and shops.
